Mike Mulroy runs the line at HQ 08 April 2017 at 09:19

NLD referee and National Panel Assistant Referee Mike Mulroy was recently selected to run the line for the Nat West Schools Cup U15 Final held at Twickenham.

Mike has been refereeing for 8 years since injury forced him to stop playing, although he was in the dizzy heights of “veterans Rugby” by then. He joined NLD four years ago and has been a “busy” referee ever since. Last season Mike applied for an opening with the RFU National Panel as an Assistant Referee and after some coaching from other NLD members and several test games he was selected for the 2016-17 season. “I was over the moon when I received the call about the Nat West finals.” Mike said “As a child, even an adult you dream of playing at Twickenham and for some from the grassroots of rugby this is a fairy tale that does come true but they are in the minority.” To be given that opportunity in my first year as a Panel AR was amazing and one decision I never hesitated in making. I hope there’s lots more to come but I think I can die happy now”

Although his RFU commitments this season have kept him very busy in National 2, BUCS Super League and Women’s Premiership, he has continued to be an active member for NLD both with flag and whistle in hand, taking charge of 25 senior games this season including Nottingham Academy and the two Nottingham Universities as well as assisting in many more.

Mike doesn’t stop there, he is instrumental in mentoring some of our YMOs, giving advice to newer referees and also writing and delivering the new RFU Match Official Developer’s Course for the RFU. It's always useful for newer referees to watch and listen to a more experienced ref and Mike is happy for any YMO or recently qualified ref to pop along to his games where then can also listen to the conversation that he is having during the game.
