|NLD Young Match Officials Launch 2nd June 2016
On Thursday last, 56 Young Match Officials (YMOs) attended the official launch of the group at Southwell RFC. Their ages range from 14 to 18.
During the launch, Jake Hill of the NLD Referees Society gave a talk on his journey to becoming a Level 6 Referee within the Society.
John Widdowson (Area 4 Match Official Development Manager)made a presentation on why young match officials are needed.
Paul Carroll of NLDRFURS gave a presentation on the Society and all the YMOs then participated in an enjoyable Practical Refereeing Session outdoors.
The YMOs were then fed and issued with a kitbag and polo shirt branded with the RFU "Young Whistlers" logo.
Many of these YMOs have previously received Level 1 - Refereeing the Children's Game training delivered at Samworth Academy in Mansfield on February 18th 2016.
A Level 2 - Refereeing the 15-a-side game training course is programmed in Nottinghamshire for the 25th-27th October (Half Term) for the YMOs. This will then make them eligible to join the Society. 40+ of the attendees at the lauch event indicated their interest in this course and it is expected that some of these will wish to join and officiate for the Society.
This presents the Society with a challenge, as we will need to mentor, coach and look after them, and this will require resource that is already in short supply within the Society.
At this stage I have no solutions as to how we will address this challenge, but without our help it is likely that many Young Officials will not continue to officiate for long.
So please think about how you can help these young people and please contact me if you would like to do so.
